    Mancini sparks Roma to win

Brazilian talisman Mancini scored two goals on Wednesday to give Roma a 2-1 victory over 10-man Torino, keeping the capital city side within seven points of the leaders Inter Milan in Serie A.

Torino handed Roma an extra advantage in the 25th minute when Ivan Franceschini picked up a straight red card and was dismissed, and that opened the door for Mancini to slot home the opener in the 37th minute.

Roma played it cool throughout the second half, never getting overly aggressive so as to expose themselves to a counterattack, and their work paid off 10 minutes from the end as Mancini notched his second goal.

Alessandro Rosina pulled one back as a consolation for the home side in added time.

    Tavano to join AS Roma

Valencia will loan striker Francesco Tavano to AS Roma for the rest of the season.

"We have reached an agreement. The player will return to Valencia on Dec. 28 and will join Roma on Jan. 4," Valencia president Juan Soler was quoted by the website of sports daily Marca on Thursday.

Tavano has failed to make an impact at Valencia since his arrival from Empoli on a four-year contract in August.

Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores, who reportedly didn't welcome the signing of the 27-year-old Italian, has only given him with six appearances in which he has failed to score.

Tavano scored 37 Italian league goals for Empoli in the past two seasons.

    Christmas message for Totti

Italian boss Roberto Donadoni has admitted that regardless of Francesco Totti’s reluctance to play international football he will still be called up to the squad on current form.

The Roma striker has insisted that he will not return to international duty until the metal plates inserted in his ankle are removed in September 2007 but Donadoni has now suggested that Totti maybe selected for the European Championship qualifier against Scotland in March.

“If he plays with this sort of consistency and offers these kind of performances then he will inevitably be included. If he continues to play like he has been then I will certainly include him in the squad for March,” stated Donadoni.

He concluded, “If he decides that he doesn’t want to play anymore then that is different.”

Platini To Totti: We Are Both Number 10s, We Can't Fight!

"Le Roi" writes a letter to the Roma captain. Is peace on the way?

It must be a great Christmas atmosphere that's being breathed in France. After the article in France Football that proposes to make peace with Materazzi, now comes another interesting bit of news from Michel Platini. The Uefa presidential candidate wrote a letter to Francesco Totti to put a lid on the polemics that had initiated the past weeks between the two.

"Dear Francesco - "Le Roi" wrote in a letter of the monthly "Number Ten" - you are an artist of football, a true number 10, as I was, how can you and I have an argument? It's impossible. Us artists can only tease each other without meanness."

"Just as in my time there was a certain Sivori who made jokes about me, so in twenty years I'm sure you will make jokes about the future number 10 of Roma. And knowing you, I'm sure it will be very funny. Just as I do at times, but with irony and affection for who impersonates the beauty of football. Someone referred to you wrongly about things I supposedly said about you."

"I wish you to win with the shirt of your favorite team: in 2009 the Champions League final will be played in your stadium, the Olimpico of Rome. Perhaps I will see you there..."

Vincenzo Montella is training with Fulham and should complete his move to the club in the next 24 hours.

The Italian international arrived in London on Wednesday and has already met his new team-mates.

The 32-year-old is to sign on a six-month loan from Roma with a view to penning a permanent deal at Craven Cottage.

Skysports.com understand the move will be completed on Thursday, once the formalities of a medical have been completed.

Fulham are likely to include Montella in their squad for their FA Cup tie at Leicester City on Saturday.

Nantes winger Christian Wilhelmsson has joined Roma on loan, after Middlesbrough also showed interest in the Sweden international.

Wilhelmsson has struggled to make an impact at Nantes since arriving from Belgian side Anderlecht last season.

He has now linked up with Roma on loan for the rest of the season, with the option of a four-year contract in the summer.

According to his agent Fabio Alho, Middlesbrough were also keen on the player, who was previously linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

Alho said: "Those clubs made concrete offers.

"Christian loves to attack. Coach Georges Eo has a different view about football, so it is better for everyone if Christian leaves, at least until June."

Wilhelmsson's new coach Luciano Spalletti expressed his delight at being able to bring the wide man to Roma.

Spalletti said: "I know him because he was on trial at Udinese a few years ago, even if he then decided to go to Anderlecht.

"He can play on the attacking wing on both sides - left and right.

"With him, who has arrived on loan with the possibility of signing permanently in the summer, we have seven players for four roles, and for this reason we feel good."

    Home sweet Rome for Chivu
    Wednesday 10 January, 2007

Roma defender Cristian Chivu has no intention of leaving the capital club. “He wants to stay here,” declared his agent.

The Romanian is contracted to the Giallorossi until the summer of 2008, but has attracted the interest of some of Europe’s top clubs.

Real Madrid, Milan and Inter are all supposed to be lining up bids for the stopper, even if the 26-year-old looks to be going nowhere.

“Cristian has absolutely no intention of leaving Roma,” said agent Andrea Pretti to Radio Incontro.

“We are not in a hurry to renew his contract, the player has reiterated his desire to continue his adventure here and he has not changed his mind,” added the representative.

“Cristian has an excellent relationship with both Roma and Coach Luciano Spalletti, who is managing to obtain important results in a serene atmosphere.

“Furthermore, this city and the club are contagious realities, which conquer the hearts of players as well as their agents,” ended Pretti.

Chivu, who joined the club from Ajax in 2003, is reportedly interested in signing a five-year contract extension with the Olimpico outfit.

No Chance For Scudetto, Admits Spalletti

Roma are currently 11 points behind Inter in Serie A and this weekend the Giallorossi will face the Nerazzurri at San Siro in a game which could definitively put the word end on the title race.

No Chance For Scudetto, Admits Spalletti
Luciano Spalletti was present at the 'Oscar del Calcio' awards on Monday night, where he won the award of best coach.

Following the ceremony, he spoke about the Serie A and Roma, responding in a realistic way to the possibilities of reaching Inter at the top of the Italian league.

"Roma can only think about making a good impression. I think that now it's very difficult to reach Inter. They know their strength and have shown it."

The Giallorossi have so far grabbed 46 points in the Serie A standings, which by normal circumstances would be considered a very good result, but Roma’s achievements have been obscured by Inter’s irresistible march towards the Scudetto.

Luciano Spalletti spoke about the Roma-Milan Italian Cup return leg match:
‘The Italian Cup is very important to us. We want to make a good showing and try to win. The result from the San Siro is an advantage for us only in theory because Milanare a really strong side with a great coach and they know how to play good football. I hope that our initial approach to the game will be different, but many of the things that I saw in that game I would like to see again.’

    Spalletti holds underdog tag
    Tuesday 30 January, 2007

Luciano Spalletti realises a draw could see Roma through to the Coppa Italia Final, but doesn't think they have the advantage over Milan.

"The Rossoneri are a fantastic side, so while in theory we may have the advantage from the first leg result, that's not the case in practice," said the Coach ahead of Wednesday's semi-final.

Last week’s encounter at San Siro saw Roma fight back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw, so on the away goals rule they are favourites to qualify for their third consecutive Final.

“Milan play good football and, even if Kaka won’t play, they have plenty of champions to take his place. It’d be important for us to reach the Final for our fans.”

This is set to be an extraordinary week in the Roma camp, as the Coppa clash is followed by Sunday’s Scudetto showdown with runaway leaders Inter. However, even Spalletti is downbeat about their chances after falling 11 points behind.

“These are two crucial games and a victory on Sunday, regardless of the fact we’re facing Inter, would allow us to maintain our distance from the teams chasing us for second place. That’s always a danger.

“To beat the Nerazzurri would be a strong signal to show a new twist to this Championship, both by interrupting their 14-match winning streak and allowing us to close in by three points. My players must always try to win, even in games between ranks.”

Others are even more dismissive of Roma’s chances at the title, as betting agency SNAI said this week it would start paying out on bets made for Inter as Scudetto winners.

“That was a commercial consideration, not saying Roma were done for,” assured Spalletti. “Besides, they were just trying to drum up some publicity.”

As for the tension between the tactician and Amantino Mancini, he was blunt but logical.

“The video clips of Mancini looking upset after the substitution were edited together to look worse than they really were. I decide the team sheets and we know how to make sure everyone respects the rules. Mancini can do what he wants, but I will continue to make my choices.”

    Rampant Roma delight Spalletti
    Thursday 1 February, 2007

Coach Luciano Spalletti was thrilled after Roma cruised to the Coppa Italia Final by sweeping past Milan 3-1.

The Giallorossi completed a 5-3 aggregate win thanks to goals from Amantino Mancini, Simone Perrotta and David Pizarro after the 2-2 draw at the San Siro last week.

“It was a difficult match, but we read it perfectly,” said Spalletti after the game at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I want to compliment the entire team, they gave everything tonight in an amazing atmosphere thanks to our supporters.

“We played an excellent match, never losing the needed focus,” continued the Giallorossi boss.

Roma, who have reached the Final four times in the last five years, will probably face Inter – who lead 3-0 over Sampdoria after the first leg – in a repeat of the 2005 and 2006 Finals.

“If Inter make it through then we will be ready for them,” he added ahead of the League game between the pair. “They are a strong side but so are we.

“The Scudetto? It’s a difficult word to remember because Roberto Mancini’s team is aware of its strength and an 11-point lead is quite a lot.”

Roma could have extended their lead against Milan in minute 63 last night, when Francesco Totti failed to convert yet another penalty this season.

“When you have already missed in the past, it’s normal that you can make the same mistake again,” concluded Spalletti.

Roma Forever - De Rossi The Italian midfielder wants to remain with the Giallorossi till the end of his career and soon a new deal will be signed.
Daniele De Rossi is one of Roma and Italy's brightest stars, a player sought by many big clubs, but for the young midfielder, there is only one team: Roma.

"Since I want to remain here for life, and I believe that even Roma wants to hold on to me, there shouldn't be any problems."

De Rossi revealed that Luciano Spalletti often reprimands him...but not for the way he plays!

"Spalletti sometimes reproaches me because in the dressing room I cause trouble, shout, joke with everyone and I never stay put."

    Roma come first for Mexes
    Tuesday 6 February, 2007

Philippe Mexes is keen on renewing his Roma contract despite having attracted interest from several massive clubs.

The 24-year-old is contracted to the Giallorossi until 2008 and has been paired with a £7.5m summer move to either Milan or Real Madrid.

However, the former Auxerre stopper has underlined that the capital city outfit are his primary concern.

“We have several issues to discuss [including the £1.7m salary cap], but I am ready to meet with Roma officials to discuss my renewal,” said the Frenchman.

“I like it here. This is a young squad and it feels like a large family. I hope we will find an agreement soon,” added the international.

One man also set to put pen to paper on a new Roma deal is Christian Panucci, who is expected to extend his agreement until 2010.

Meanwhile, the agent of Diomansy Kamara has revealed that Roma failed in a January swoop for the striker.

The in-form West Brom ace was wanted by the Olimpico boys, but the proposed winter transfer collapsed just before the window closed.

“I received a phone call from Roma director Daniele Pradè,” revealed Fabrizio Ferrari to calciomercato.com.

“He wanted the player on loan with an option to buy him at the end of the season, but this wasn’t a feasible solution,” added the representative.
