(SOURCE = PLANET FOOTBALL) Ze Roberto has expressed his delight at returning to Bayern Munich's squad.

The Brazilian winger is back with the Bundesliga giants following a year in his home country with Santos.

Ze Roberto has revealed differences with former coach Felix Magath forced him to leave, although recent signings restored desire and confidence.

"I am a new Ze Roberto and this is a new Bayern Munich," he stated. "After a year with Santos my confidence is back.

"When I left Bayern it was because Magath had taken away my desire to play, even though I was of the best players in the Bundesliga.

"Bayern officials have now decided to sign important players like Toni, Klose, Ribery and Sosa, so I'm happy to be back in the team."

(SOURCE = PLANET FOOTBALL) Uli Hoeness has hinted that Roque Santa Cruz is on borrowed time at Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Ottmar Hitzfeld and is likely to be fifth-choice striker behind Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski and Jan Schlaudraff.

And Bayern's general manager Hoeness gave a strong hint that the Paraguay international is likely to be surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena this term.

"We have four players for two striking positions, that is more than enough," Hoeness told AFP when asked about Santa Cruz's position at Bayern.

Hoeness' comments are certain to alert the likes of Blackburn, Manchester City and West Ham, who are all thought to be tracking the striker.

Santa Cruz, who signed for Bayern in 1999, has become increasingly frustrated with his lack of first-team opportunities at the Bavarian giants and is said to be keen on a move to England.

Bayern beat Schalke, win pre-season Cup

Miroslav Klose scored his first goal for Bayern Munich to lead his new team to a 1-0 victory over Schalke 04 in the pre-season League Cup final in Leipzig on Saturday.

Klose, who joined Bayern in the close season from Werder Bremen, took advantage of defensive blunders by Schalke defender Mladen Krstajic and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, tapping in from just inside the box as he fell backwards in the 29th minute.

But Bayern, hungry for silverware after finishing a disappointing fourth last season, showed little of the flair they had displayed in thrashing Werder 4-1 and Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart 2-0 en route to the final.

Still, Bayern did enough to win the trophy for the sixth time in its 11-season history and earned nearly 2 million euro ($A3.17 million) in the process.

The six-team tournament, with a total 5.2 million euro ($A8.24 million) prize money, involved the top four sides in the Bundesliga last season plus German Cup winners Nuremberg and second division champions Karlsruhe.

    Wagner music to Bayern's ears

The recruitment at the Allianz Arena has been impressive this year - World Cup winner Luca Toni, World Cup finalist Franck Ribery and World Cup Golden Boot winner Miroslav Klose are among the players who have been brought in.

The lure of Bayern Munich remains strong despite the club's failure to qualify for this season's UEFA Champions League following a disastrous fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga last term.

Brazilian Ze Roberto has returned to bolster the ranks after spending last season with Santos in his homeland - the midfielder previously played with Bayern from 2002-06 - while four other players have also arrived through the revolving door.

Defender Marcell Jansen singed from Borussia Monchengladbach, midfielders Hamit Altintop and Jose Ernesto Sosa joined from Schalke and Estudiantes respectively and striker Jan Schlaudraff moved to the club from Alemannia Aachen.

But the high-profile acquisitions and other pre-season captures could yet find themselves playing second fiddle to rookie Sandro Wagner this season.

He could prove to have a greater impact than any of them on the first team following his promotion through the ranks.

With Klose, Toni, Lukas Podolski and Schlaudraff all unavailable, the 19-year-old was thrust in to the starting line-up for the League Cup semi-final against VfB Stuttgart.

Wagner, on his debut, inspired Bayern to a 2-0 victory over the Bundesliga champions.

He set up Frenchman Ribery, a 26million euro ($A41.6million) capture from Marseille, for the first, before getting on the scoresheet himself after 66 minutes for his first senior goal.

It was a display that captured the attention of the Bavarian side's fanatical support - and the club's hierarchy.

Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness was full of praise for the teenager, who contested the German championship final with the Bayern under-19s a year ago.

"Sandro did a tremendous job," he said.

Head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was not surprised by the protege's impact, though.

"If he hadn't done well so far, he wouldn't have played," said the veteran boss. "I have complete faith in him."

Hitzfeld admitted the forward fulfilled his role faultlessly against Stuttgart, adding: "In terms of his ability, he was perfect."

The emergence of Wagner even convinced the Bayern hierarchy that they could cash in on Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz.

Wagner was preferred against Stuttgart before Santa Cruz completed a GBP3.5million ($A9million) move to English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers.

Wagner is tipped to complement instinctive goal-poachers Klose and Toni by bringing his more illustrious colleagues in to play.

"He can hold up play and pass the ball," Hitzfeld added. "He's like a rebound wall, he lets the ball come off him."

The 6ft 4in Wagner certainly has the presence to hold up the ball in the physical Bundesliga and could prove to be the ideal focal point of Bayern's attack.

Hoeness has also praised Wagner's rapid progression - he appeared in all of the club's warm-up matches this pre-season - especially after the player struggled in the reserves last year.

"He's made unbelievable progress after a poor season in the reserves last term," Hoeness said.

"That makes me even more delighted he's done so well here."

Reserve coach Hermann Gerland added: "Last season, he couldn't pass a ball accurately more than a couple of yards, so I'm obviously delighted for him now."

"I'm excited to see what happens when he comes back to us."

Gerland may not be given that luxury, however.

Hitzfeld handed Wagner his Bundesliga debut in the opening round of the league season as the 19-year-old replaced two-goal hero Klose for the final three minutes of the 3-0 win over Hansa Rostock.

It could be a sign of things to come.

Hitzfeld's delight as Ribery-inspired Bayern blitz Bremen

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld was full of praise for France international Franck Ribery after the midfielder put in a five-star performance in Saturday's 4-0 humbling of Werder Bremen at the Weser Stadium.

Ribery opened the scoring and bossed Bayern's midfield as the German giants ran riot against a Bremen side depleted by injuries to key midfielders Torsten Frings and Tim Borowski.

Having finished third in last season's Bundesliga, Bremen had no reply to Bayern's newly-recruited stars as Ribery converted a 31st minute penalty and Italian striker Luca Toni found the back of the net after the break.

Super sub Hamit Altintop then struck with 10 minutes remaining before fellow replacement Andreas Ottl sealed the win which means Bayern top the league and have now scored seven goals without reply from their first two games.

In his first game back at his former club, Bayern striker Miroslav Klose was hacked down after just three minutes and was taken off at half-time as Hitzfeld rearranged his side with devastating results.

"There wasn't much between the sides at the break, but after the loss of Miroslav Klose we had to change our attacking formations considerably," said Hitzfeld.

"That was when Ribery really came into his own and made it hard for Bremen to defend against our attacks.

"But one shouldn't forget that Bremen have a few injury problems and we had a fair bit of luck."

After seeing his depleted side humbled, Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf took the defeat on the chin.

"We just gave Bayern too much space after the break and invited them to attack us," he said.

"So we can hardly complain when we are punished for it, it was a hard lesson to learn, but we will be working hard next week to fix the problems."

The guests took the lead when Ribery calmly slotted home his penalty after Toni was brought down on the edge of the penalty area.

The 24-year-old Ribery waited for Bremen goalkeeper Tim Weise to dive to his right before slotting his shot exactly where Weise had been.

Klose stayed in the dressing room after half-time, to be replaced by Altintop, and the Turkish international broke through the defence to supply a neat pass to Toni and the World Cup winner expertly slotted home on 51 minutes.

Altintop then added to Bremen's misery on 79 minutes before fellow substitute Ottl hit a superb shot which gave Wiese no chance to complete the rout.

Defending Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at Hertha Berlin.

The visitors' German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger smashed a thunderbolt shot past Hertha's goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on 15 minutes.

But Berlin came back as first midfielder Sofian Chahed slotted a penalty and then defender Malik Fathi headed home before Nigerian striker Solomon Okoronkwo hit an 81st minute goal to seal the win.

Last season's runners-up Schalke 04 enjoyed a 4-1 win at home to bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund.

First defender Marcelo Bordon scored with a header on 11 minutes before defender Christian Pander slotted home a 31st minute free-kick.

A header from German international striker Gerald Asamoah on 59 minutes made it 3-0 before Dortmund pulled a goal back only for striker Kevin Kuranyi to score in the 78th minute to complete the guests' misery.

After their 3-0 defeat at Bayern last weekend, Hansa Rostock's bad start to the season continued as they were beaten 2-1 at Nuremberg.

VfL Wolfsburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at Duisburg, while Arminia Bielefeld were held 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt.

On Friday night, Hanover had to come from behind to beat Karlsruhe and on Sunday Bayer Leverkusen travel to Hamburg and VfL Bochum are at Energie Cottbus.

    Bayern carrying Injuries

    Bayern carrying Injuries

Bayern Munich have spent more than 70 million euros (AUS$116.41million) to build their squad back up over the off-season, but injuries mean even their resources will be tested when they host Hanover 96 on the weekend.

Bayern played so well in beating Hansa Rostock 3-0 and Werder Bremen 4-0 in the opening two games that their only two threats would appear to be complacency or an injury crisis.

The personnel situation cannot yet be called a crisis but coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will be concerned that he has only one striker available.

Luca Toni, the new Italian signing who has scored twice already, will have to lead the line alone after Miroslav Klose joined Jan Schlaudraff and Lukas Podolski on the casualty list.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marcell Jansen are also big doubts after they were forced to miss Germany's friendly against England at Wembley.

Centre-back Lucio has a calf injury but could be fit for the visit of Hanover, who got their first win of the season when they came from a goal down to beat Karlsruhe.

Despite the concerns, Bayern will be overwhelming favourites to make it three wins out of three, and Hitzfeld is already having to field suggestions that his side can go through the entire season without giving up top spot.

"There's a long way to go yet this season and a lot can still happen," Hitzfeld told reporters. "You can be very unlucky with injuries. There are still plenty of question marks."

Bayern could in fact lose top spot, at least for one night, when Hamburg SV play away at Bochum a day earlier.

Hamburg are the only other side apart from Bayern with maximum points from two matches.

They should be boosted by Rafael van der Vaart's apparent acceptance that he will be staying put, with Valencia now having given up their pursuit of the Dutch playmaker.

Champions VfB Stuttgart have just a point from their opening two games. They go in search of a first win of the season at home to Duisburg. The good news for coach Armin Veh is that Mexican international Ricardo Osorio is fit again.

Werder, who also have just a point to their name, are the other obvious under-performers after the first two rounds.

Coach Thomas Schaaf has had no such positive news in the build up to his side's game away to Cup winners Nurnberg, as he copes with a genuine injury crisis depriving him of players like Torsten Frings, Tim Borowski and Carlos Alberto.

Last season's runners-up Schalke 04, who have four points, are in action away to VfL Wolfsburg.
