EXCLUSIVE - Sheffield United Chairman Kevin McCabe is in Sydney this weekend and is on the lookout for A-League talent for his club.

McCabe told au.fourfourtwo.com exclusively this morning that he has high expectations about picking up some of our younger A-League talent for the Bramall Lane club.

“I expect we can do business in Australia with some of your younger players,” said McCabe.

When asked if this included Sydney FC players Mark Milligan and David Carney McCabe was coy, saying only “you never know.”

He added: “We have had some terrific Aussie players at Sheffield United, such as Shaun Murphy, Carl Veart and Doug Hodgson.

“They’ve been great for the club and we’re looking to develop some more local players in England.”

McCabe is here on property business, but is also looking around for players.

Sheffield United was relegated from the Premier League last season.

Former Socceroos defender Tony Popovic could make his Sydney FC debut against Central Coast Mariners at Canberra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The unavailability of half-a-dozen players for the 2007 Pre-Season Cup Group B game means that Sydney FC coach Branko Culina could give debuts to Popovic and former Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Michael Enfield.

Popovic won 58 caps for Australia in a 12-year international career, scoring eight goals and playing against Brazil in the 2006 World Cup.

Enfield, available after receiving his international clearance, played 11 matches for the Major League Soccer team that Sydney FC will face in a one-off friendly game at Telstra Stadium on November 27.

Sydney FC will have to subject Central Coast Mariners to capital punishment at Canberra Stadium to stand a chance of making the 2007 Pre-Season Cup semi-finals.

The mathematics are complicated but, as it stands going into the final round of group games, one thing is certain - Sydney FC must score a minimum of three goals and win to have any hope of progressing.

That is because bonus points over and above the usual three for a win and one for a draw are up for grabs in the competition. Teams receive one bonus point for scoring two goals in a match, two bonus points for scoring three goals in a match and three bonus points for scoring four or more goals in a match.

Do yout think Sydney will win and get the 3 goals needed?

I think Sydney may just scrape home with a win but they won't score 3 goals.

SOCCEROO hero Mark Milligan has gone AWOL from Sydney FC - and is believed to be on trial in France without his club's permission.

This morning Sydney coach Branko Culina admitted: "We don't know where he is - I am very disappointed."

Milligan was given time off from the club to recover from the rigours of the Asian Cup, but was expected to be back in training on Monday.

But Sydney have discovered Milligan flew out to Europe - and they have no idea when or if he will return.

Sydney don't even know which club he is trialling for, but believe it may be Lens or Metz.

"The only thing we know is that he's gone overseas," said Culina today. "They don't need to behave like this. They don't have to do it in this sneaky way.

"There are procedures and protocols for this kind of thing. I don't blame Millsy, I blame his management.

"Good sensible people do not ignore the system or advice of others just so they can get their 10, 20 or 30 percent agent's fee. That's not going to help these players."

Milligan and Dave Carney have been linked with a range of clubs in Europe and the English Championship after their impressive performances for Australia in the Asian Cup.

But Sydney FC have not been contacted by any clubs and were hoping to be able to keep the players for the new season.

"We have rules about this sort of thing and I'm sure our CEO George Perry will be in touch with whatever club this turns out to be," added Culina.

"We have contracts in place to protect the club and players from just this sort of thing.

"But Milligan should not be jumping at opportunities like this. He and Dave are both in a position to pick and choose just about any club they like, except maybe something like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

"They shouldn't be dropping everything to sneak off and trial for a club like this. The clubs will have more respect for them if they play harder to get.

"And I speak as a man with vast experience as the father of Jason who has played for Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, which are both much bigger clubs than anything Mark will be trialling for."

He added: "We don't want to stand in the way of the players. If they want to go, we can help them.

"Obviously they would love the challenge to play overseas and they would dearly love to be part of the big picture.

"Despite what might be said by some, there's nothing we can do to match the money or allure of playing overseas - but Millsy doesn't have to take this kind of risk to play there."

Culina was already preparing for this weekend's pre-season match in Canberra without Milligan and Carney, but is now facing the prospect of losing him altogether.

And even if he does return to the club, Culina knows Milligan won't be in peak shape.

"We could have done as Ernie Merrick has with Archie Thompson who has gone with Victory to Darwin, and insisted Milligan and Carney both played," he said.

"But we thought we'd give them a rest and let them come back fully refreshed.

"Now though Mark will be flying 30 hours to Europe and 30 hours back again. It's going to be much harder for him."

He added: "If it was the off-season, this would be much less of a problem - but we are about to start our campaign.

"Our pre-season has been an absolute shamozzle because of our players being away on international duty or injured.

"But if a club now comes to us and says they want to take one of our players we will consider it.

"No-one has to be sneaky about it though."

    Re: SYDNEY F.C. OFFICIAL THREAD

I would be over the moon if milligan plays in europe. He has been playing some great football for sydney fc and australia and deserves to play in one of the top leagues in the world. It's just dissapointing how it happened-not getting allowance from sydney fc. Like the article says I don't blame milligan, I blame his management. Its just great to see, the a-league is a great standard and big clubs from europe are interested in our home grown stars. Its good to see that Europe want our players, but its also dissapoitning to see the a-league lose their best players- nick carle and maybe carney and milligan. These are the attractions that bring ppl to the games.

It's a sticky situation. You want our players to be playing 30-40 games a year in a high standard team in a high standard competition somewhere in europe so they can develop as players.  But you want also to keep some of the talent for the a-league. I still the think the problem is the a-league plays not enough games. 21 rounds is definitly not enough. Atleast 28 rounds, to luar players to stay and play in the a-league.

    FROM THE NEWSROOM

    [quote user="FOXHOUND"]

Sydney FC end marquee mess with Juninho swoop - August 1, 2007

SYDNEY FC's prolonged search for a new marquee player is over, with former Brazilian international Juninho Paulista agreeing to join the club for this season.

Juninho, 34, is believed to have agreed terms last week and is expected to be unveiled by the club on Friday. The former Middlesbrough playmaker is set to make his first public appearance in Saturday night's pre-season match against Newcastle Jets.

Juninho has not played regularly since being released by his Brazilian club, Flamengo, two months ago, and had hoped to return to England. But a failed move to newly promoted Premiership side Derby County has convinced Juninho to join the Brazilian exodus to the A-League, where he becomes Sydney FC's first signing from South America.

While Sydney FC coach Branko Culina had shifted his sights to signing a striker following a failed attempt to recruit Dutch veteran Phillip Cocu, the recent collapse of negotiations with former England forward Robbie Fowler moved Juninho back to the top of the list of targets. It is believed Culina intends to use Juninho in an advanced midfield role, where his record suggests he can contribute a steady stream of goals.

Juninho will be the only foreign marquee player in the competition this season and is the highest-profile player to join the A-League since Sydney's previous marquee signing, Dwight Yorke. The signing is a timely boost for the club following the recent dramas surrounding Socceroos pair David Carney and Mark Milligan, who have made no secret of their desire to move abroad on the eve of the new season. Sheffield United, relegated from the Premiership last season, are believed to have made a formal offer for Carney late yesterday.

Two years ago there were only two Brazilians in the A-League, but this season there will be 11.

YAYAYAYAYAYA!!! Its marquee time. cant wait for the 1st match. i'm there!

YEAH! we have not just a marquee player. sydney have just signed a brazilian. Good to see sydney buy such a great player and good to see sydney finally buy a south american. Will Juninho solve our goal scoring troubles? I think he will help alot but we still need one more striker and 1 or 2 midfielders to replace carney and milligan who will probably leave.

    Re: SYDNEY F.C. OFFICIAL THREAD

yes its good to see milligan will play 4 sydney fc this year and sad to see david carney go to sheffield united. but i wish him all the luck in the world at sheffield, hope he plays gr8 and hope he plays in the premier league next season if they get promoted. Yeah sydney signed 19 year old biddle and also signed youngster viadic. I cant express my happiness towards sydney signing juninho, such a high profile player joining sydney. and popovic as captain is also awesome. hey, it looks like everything is falling into place for sydney. CHAMPIONS FOR 2007/08 season.

an absolute icing on the cake would be if john aloisi joined the already gr8 sydney fc squad. I no its very unlikely but it would be fantastic for sydney, a player like aloisi scoring off juninhos through balls.

yeah i dont see aloisi coming to sydney, but sheffield united bought carney for $125,000 so there will be some room and money left over for alosi.

sydney lost again last night. Lets hope there poor pre-season form doesnt carry over into season 3 of the a-league. Im sure juninho and milligan will make the nessacary changes to the team to help them win again.

    Re: SYDNEY F.C. OFFICIAL THREAD

do you think juninho paulista will make a bigger impact than dwight yorke? Dwight Yorke won sydney an a-league, so juninho to live up to yorkey woud be 2 win another title for sydney. Junino will probly play the same role as yorkey did, no doubt he will play attacking mid, do you think juninho will be a better player than dwight was?
