In don't think is fair to compare Ronaldo and Riquelme trophy wise, because Riquelme has been far more successful at club level. Yes Riquelme has won very few trophies in Europe, but he's been a very accomplished player in South America; 3 Argentine Championships (Argentine Leagues), 3 Copa Libertadores (the South American Champions League), and 1 Intercontinental Cup. Riquelme made the most of his time with Boca Juniors and Villarreal.. on the other hand, Ronaldo injuries, bad decisions, and all exceptions aside.. didn't made the most of his time with Inter, and Real Madrid (wich are 10 years of playing).
So Ronaldo only managed to win 1 UEFA Cup with Inter, and 1 La Liga and 1 Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid. So he managed to win 3 prestigious-important trophies in 10 years. When I compare this to Riquelme's club achievements; 3 Argentine League Titles, 3 Copa Libertadores, and 1 Intercontinental Cup with Boca Juniors, 1 Intertoto Cup (Villarreal), Champions League Semi-Final finish with Villarreal (deserves a mention), and 3rd place finish with Villarreal in the Spanish La Liga. I think Riquelme has done better at club level, I mean Riquelme won 8 important-prestigious trophies in 7 1/2 years.
Just another example of how underrated Riquelme is in Europe, any other player with Riquelme's Club Records would have walked his way very easily to any team in Europe, be it Juventus, or Inter, or AC Milan, or Real Madrid, or many others.. On the other hand, Ronaldo was a very recognised figure in Europe; he won 3 FIFA World Player of the Year awards, and he obviously deserved one of them, but the other two?? He won his first one back in 1996 just becasue he won the Dutch Cup with PSV Eindhoven. And he won his second one in 1997 just because he won the Cup Winners' Cup with FC Barcelona. I mean, that's ridiculous, are the Dutch Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup more competitive and prestigious than CONMEBOL's Copa Libertadores!! What a lack of respect towards South American Football!!
Just a remainder that there is such a thing as 'underrated' players, and Riquelme's one of them. Any other player with Riquelme's list of trophies and achievements at club level - would have walked his way very easily into any team in Europe. Ronaldo was a very recognised figure in European Football (as I clearified above, the fact that he won 3 FIFA World Player of the Year awards serves as evidence), on the other hand Riquelme hasn't received the recognition he deserves in Europe, and unfortunately he will never be recognised as he should be. Ronaldo was a great player, nobody questions it, but unlike his international career with Brazil.. Ronaldo didn't made the most of his club career.
