    Roma super sub sinks Sporting

A fine individual goal from substitute Mirko Vučinić gave AS Roma three precious points from a tight contest against Sporting Clube de Portugal at the Stadio Olimpico to leave them clear in second place in UEFA Champions League Group F after three games.

    Super sub
A replacement for the injured Francesco Totti, the Montenegrin's 70th-minute strike was only his fourth goal for the Giallorossi. Earlier, in an even first half, Sporting's Liedson had equalised fellow Brazilian Juan's header for the home side.

    Cat and mouse
With the return match coming up in Lisbon on 7 November, it was a cautious opening on a cold night in Rome as the teams sized each other up. The first chance was not long in arriving though. From a corner, Roma's Philippe Mexes managed to muscle into a clear shooting position yet watched in horror as his fierce shot clipped the top of the crossbar. Sporting were having problems dealing with the high ball and from a 15th-minute left-wing corner, Roma's other centre-back, Juan, rose unchallenged at the near post before calmly steering his header past the advancing Tiago and into an empty net.

    Forward thinking
Mirroring Giallorossi coach Luciano Spalletti's commitment to attack, Sporting boss Paulo Bento had included two forwards in his lineup and within three minutes of Roma's opener, the Portuguese club were level. Abel got to the byline and from his right-wing centre Liedson ghosted between Roma's centre-halves to thunder a header into the far corner.

    Frenetic
The match was suddenly stretched. Totti, who had needed treatment after a jarring block, found space in his favourite position on the corner of the box but screwed a right-footed shot wide. From a similar position at the other end, Yannick Djaló saw his goal-bound effort deflected for a corner. In a frenetic spell of all-out attack, Juan was again left unmarked from a 24th-minute corner but this time nodded over.

    Off the spot
Three minutes after the restart, Roma had a glorious chance to retake the lead. Vučinić, who had come on for the injured Totti ten minutes before half-time, somehow wriggled between two defenders inside the area before being upended. Mancini telegraphed the penalty though and Tiago, only playing because regular No1 Vladimir Stojković had returned late after international duty, saved low to his right.

    Wasteful finishing
Marco Cassetti and Mancini had swapped wings and from the former's left-wing delivery, the Brazilian fired wastefully over as the Roman crowd vented their frustration. Then, on the hour, Marat Izmailov almost silenced them outright but the Sporting player's raking long-range drive was tipped round the post by the diving Doni.

    Solo goal
With 20 minutes remaining, however, the stadium erupted. There was seemingly little on when Vučinić picked up possession down the left, beat one defender, cut inside another before firing high into the far corner. Sporting suddenly appeared spent. With seconds left, they mustered one last shot on goal but Miguel Veloso's free-kick was comfortably kept out by Doni. Roma had done enough.

    Spalletti revels in Roma victory

    Tuesday 23 October 2007

AS Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was a satisfied man after his team picked up three points at home against Sporting Clube de Portugal with substitute Mirko Vučinić scoring the winner after Juan's opening goal had been cancelled out by Liedson for Sporting. Losing coach Paulo Bento now feels his side have to win when the teams meet again in UEFA Champions League Group F two weeks' time or they will be facing elimination.

    Luciano Spalletti, Roma coach
We were not very relaxed at the beginning, which is normal because we were coming from a series of games in which we conceded a lot of goals. However, we were very determined and approached the game the right way, even though we knew it was a very difficult test. I was sure sooner or later we would be able to gain control and we did. The victory was fully deserved because we did not risk much while we had several chances to score. We didn't start quickly but raised our tempo in the second half. The game in Lisbon will now be decisive for qualification. I haven't given Vučinić much chance but today he had more time to prove his worth. He is a very good forward who can cover all roles in attack. He can give us that something extra that can decide a game.

    Paulo Bento, Sporting coach
It was a very even game for 70 minutes, but after they improved in the second half we struggled to react and gave them too much space to counterattack. We never really lost the control of the game, however. It was an important match for us and unfortunately we lost it – it now means the next game will be even more decisive. We have to beat Roma next time if we want to have some chance of progressing to the knockout stage. Roma have experience and plenty of technical and tactical quality. I don't think [Francesco] Totti's injury gave us an advantage, because his replacement [Vučinić] played very well and did well to beat our defenders. In two weeks we will see how good we are. We have to learn from tonight's experience and try to put them under pressure when we face them at home.

    Cassetti stands up for Cicinho
    Saturday 27 October, 2007

Roma full-back Marco Cassetti hopes they can maintain their good recent record at San Siro this Sunday and defends teammate Cicinho from criticism.

“Now that Alberto Gilardino has started scoring again, Milan have become an even greater squad,” said the former Lecce star.

“It is no coincidence they won the Champions League, but we have always done well against them and last season won here 2-1, so we hope to repeat that result.”

The Giallorossi visited San Siro twice last term in Serie A and won on both occasions, defeating both Milan and Inter.

Confidence was boosted by their 2-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League midweek, although Cassetti was under fire for his stuttering performance in a more advanced role.

With Francesco Totti unlikely to recover from a bruised ankle in time to face Milan, Cassetti could be pushed up again on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Italian rushed to the defence of his teammate Cicinho, who has been blasted in the media for his disappointing campaign.

“He is an important player, as he wouldn’t have that CV if he didn’t have quality. Perhaps he is finding a few difficulties, as is normal for a foreigner in his first Serie A season.

“I think he just needs a little more time, but his quality should not be put in doubt.”

Totti to miss Rome derby too?
    Saturday 27 October, 2007

Francesco Totti has officially been ruled out of the Milan match, but his ankle injury also risks his place in Wednesday’s Rome derby.

The Roma captain is not in the squad named by Luciano Spalletti for the trip up to San Siro ahead of Sunday afternoon’s showdown.

The Coach had warned that Totti was unlikely to recover in time for the game after suffering a badly bruised ankle during the 2-1 Champions League victory over Sporting Lisbon.

“It is very difficult to see Totti on the field against Milan on Sunday and Rodrigo Taddei is also in doubt,” Spalletti had said on Friday.

Totti limped off during the first half of that tie, as Liedson had run out from the defensive wall to go for the ball as the Italian was taking a touched-on free kick.

It was the right ankle – not the one that underwent surgery last year and risked ruling him out of the 2006 World Cup – but it is still a painful injury with remarkably bad timing for the Giallorossi.

Totti has not trained since the Sporting Lisbon game and time is running out, as the derby against Lazio is on the evening of Halloween.

“Without Totti Roma lose a great deal and so does football,” added Milan star Kaka when told of the news.

“It would be better for my team, obviously, but it’s not good for the sport to face Roma without their captain and symbol.”

Mirko Vucinic is expected to take over in the forward role after scoring his first goal of the season against Sporting midweek.

Roma squad: Antunes, Barusso, Bergagnoli, Brighi, Cassetti, Curci, Cicinho, De Rossi, Doni, Esposito, Ferrari, Giuly, Juan, Mancini, Mexes, Panucci, Perrotta, Pit, Pizarro, Tonetto, Vucinic

    Ancelotti's title ambitions on ice
    Saturday 27 October, 2007

Carlo Ancelotti won’t rule Milan out of the Scudetto race, as beating Roma on Sunday could propel them back into the top spots, but Massimo Oddo is injured.

The Rossoneri have not won a home match in Serie A this season and going into this weekend are 10 points adrift of leaders Inter.

“At this moment in time, we cannot think about the title. I hope we can think about it a little further on, though,” said the Coach. “Right now we’re pretty far away from that objective.”

The midweek 4-1 demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk has boosted confidence and Roma will be without captain Francesco Totti.

However, Milan are also forced to deal with an injury crisis, as Oddo has joined Marek Jankulovski on the sidelines.

“Tomorrow’s game will be another test of our current form. We are facing a great side and it will certainly be a balanced and entertaining encounter.

“We do have problems with our full-backs, as neither Jankulovski or Oddo can play, as Massimo has a muscular twinge.

“In today’s session we’ll evaluate Giuseppe Favalli’s condition, as he could recover just in time. In any case, I won’t rule out the possibility of seeing Daniele Bonera at left-back,” continued Ancelotti.

“Roma are a fantastic side who have also played very well even without Totti. I admit that his absence is an advantage for us, but I am convinced that Roma will be able to put us under pressure. They are excellent on the counter-attack and playing ball to feet.”

The Giallorossi are also coming off a midweek Champions League victory, having beaten Sporting Lisbon 2-1 to put themselves in a good position for qualification.

“They are among the strongest sides in Europe, so when most teams face Roma they tend to clam up and leave less space. We will not be doing that, instead trying to stop them with our own style of attacking play.”

Ancelotti is hoping for Milan’s first home victory of the campaign in Serie A and concedes that many of their problems – including last week’s 1-0 defeat to Empoli – are psychological.

“It is only natural that this match represents a test for us. I am absolutely convinced Milan can do well in Serie A too, it is in my view only a mental block.”

Having scored two braces against Lazio and Shakhtar Donetsk, Alberto Gilardino is tipped to start with Clarence Seedorf and Kaka in support.

“Alberto is in fine form and the two goals in the Champions League gave him extra confidence. As for Pippo Inzaghi, I think it is necessary to use him sparingly and not let him play too much. In any case, he knows when he has to be decisive. Ronaldo is not ready yet, we’ll see if he can join the squad on Thursday.”

This week Ancelotti – a former Roma player – had commented he wanted to swap jobs with Luciano Spalletti at the Olimpico.

“It was just a joke. Spalletti is doing well and so am I. Roma represent wonderful memories for me and I certainly keep them alive, but Milan are my present and I hope also my future. Never say never, but I would like to end my career with Milan.”

    Spalletti promises entertainment
    Saturday 27 October, 2007

Luciano Spalletti put his faith in Mirko Vucinic for the title battle with Milan and pledged an entertaining clash between “Italy’s most European sides.”

“Francesco Totti’s absence is important, but I have the utmost faith in Vucinic,” stated the Roma boss, as the captain is out of action with an ankle injury.

“The squad has done well without Totti in the past. We already knew Vucinic was a great player and he proved that against Sporting and will do in the future.”

The World Cup winner has not even made the trip to San Siro for this fixture and there are strong doubts he will recover for Wednesday night’s Rome derby.

“It is too early to say if Totti will recover in time for the derby,” confessed Spalletti.

“This is an important match because whoever wins it can be launched into the top spots. Milan and Roma are the most European sides in Serie A in terms of how we play. We took a lot of inspiration from them, as the Rossoneri started this style before us.

“A draw could be an acceptable result, but we always go into every game looking for the victory.”

The two clubs share a philosophy and this week Carlo Ancelotti admitted he would love to be the Roma Coach.

“I would be very happy for him to be my successor,” smiled Spalletti. “He also knows the city better than me and I still ask him for advice now. Our CV has a few trophies’ difference… I do not have the record needed to aspire to a bench like Milan.”

    Milan 0 - 1 Roma
    Vucinic 72 (R)
    Stadio Meazza

Milan cannot shake off their dismal home form, as Mirko Vucinic gave Roma a victory that all but rules the Rossoneri out of the title race. Daniele De Rossi also missed a penalty and Massimo Ambrosini was dismissed.

The Scudetto contenders went head-to-head to see who would get back on track in the hunt for leaders Inter. Both sides have been inconsistent in Serie A this season, but they also had injury worries, as Francesco Totti, Alberto Aquilani, Mauro Esposito and Rodrigo Taddei were ruled out for the visitors, while Marek Jankulovski, Massimo Oddo and Ronaldo forced a reshuffle at Milan. Veterans Paolo Maldini and Marcos Cafu took on their old roles.

Both were coming off confidence-boosting Champions League wins midweek, in which Mirko Vucinic netted his first goal of the campaign. Last term Roma won both trips here against Milan and Inter.

There was a good chance for the visitors when Vucinic pounced on a Kakha Kaladze error, but Nelson Dida was alert and rushed off his line to clear. Amantino Mancini robbed Andrea Pirlo only to shoot off target, while Daniele De Rossi helped crowd out Kaka.

On 16 minutes a Kaka angled drive from the edge of the area shaved a coat of paint off the far post with Alexander Doni beaten. Dida did well to turn a powerful Cicinho strike round the far post, but from the resulting corner the goalkeeper did not clear effectively and made up for it with a fine one-handed save on Cicinho's right-foot volley.

Cicinho almost hit the back of the net at the other end, his deflection anticipating Alberto Gilardino skimming his own goalmouth. But Dida was under a lot of pressure during this period, flying to palm a De Rossi rocket out of the far top corner.

Roma should have taken the lead on 27 minutes with a classic counter-attack, but when Mancini rolled across, Vucinic side-footed wide with only Dida to beat.

There were chances for both sides in an entertaining game, Clarence Seedorf drilling two opportunities past the post and Kaka's was deflected wide. Cafu's crucial tackle halted a dangerous Vucinic counter-attack and Philippe Mexes' toe-poke prevented Gilardino tapping in Seedorf's assist from six yards.

After the restart Gennaro Gattuso chested down the ball and flicked it past Juan before firing straight at Doni. The goalkeeper rushed out to smother Kaka's through pass to Pirlo and Gilardino's looping free header skimmed the woodwork from Maldini's cross.

It was Roma who eventually broke the deadlock. Cicinho went on the counter from Mancini's assist and crossed from the right for a splendid Vucinic diving header at the near post.

Substitute Serginho set up a good chance for Gilardino, but there was another turning point 10 minutes from time. Ambrosini held De Rossi's shirt as the Roma midfielder went for a header, leading to both a penalty and a second booking for the Milan man. De Rossi took the kick himself and attempted to chip it over Dida, but in fact fired over the bar.

That dreadful miss restored the Rossoneri's confidence, even though they were playing with 10 men, as Gilardino's twisting header shaved the base of the far post.

Ludovic Giuly struck the side-netting in stoppages and Dida was surprised by the former Barcelona star's snapshot, able to control it at the second attempt, as Roma cruised to victory.

Milan: Dida; Cafu, Nesta, Kaladze, Maldini (Favalli 78); Gattuso (Serginho 74), Pirlo, Ambrosini; Seedorf, Kakà, Gilardino

    Spalletti hails Roma approach
    Sunday 28 October, 2007

Luciano Spalletti admires the “character” shown by his Roma side in their surprise San Siro triumph as they go into second place.

“It was a balanced game, but my team proved it has taken some very clear steps forward in terms of character,” said the Coach.

Their 1-0 victory away to Milan effectively rules the Rossoneri out of the Scudetto race and allows Roma to close within three points of leaders Inter.

Even without talismanic captain Francesco Totti, they broke through with Mirko Vucinic and could have had a second if Daniele De Rossi had not chipped his penalty over the bar.

“If we look at that incident from 360 degrees, Daniele showed real personality and character in remaining so calm and confident,” insisted Spalletti.

This is the second consecutive spot-kick missed by the Giallorossi, as Amantino Mancini’s effort was saved in the 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon midweek.

    Mirko Vucinic (Roma)
It has been quite a week for the Montenegrin, who scored his first goal of the campaign in the Champions League and then snatched the decisive winner away to Milan. It is to his credit that few noticed Francesco Totti’s absence, proving at long last that Roma are not a one-man team entirely dependent on their captain.

Amantino Mancini sparked a counter by releasing fellow Brazilian Cicinho and the cross found Vucinic in front of his marker for a precise diving header at the near post.

    Totti’s derby doubt
    Monday 29 October, 2007

Roma captain Francesco Totti’s chances of playing in Wednesday’s Rome derby are 50-50.

The inspirational star missed last weekend’s game against Milan due to an ankle injury that he picked up in the Giallorossi’s Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.

It had been hoped that Totti would feature at the San Siro, but he only managed to return to full training today.

“I hope that Francesco will be there as the derby is always a Final for us,” teammate Daniele De Rossi stated.

“We have gone in as favourites for the last few years, but we haven’t managed to win.”

While the 31-year-old has been running in training it is believed that he has been experiencing some pain.

Brazilian winger Rodrigo Taddei is set to miss out on the Derby della Capitale and Sunday’s goal hero Mirko Vucinic is suffering from a groin strain.

    Roma 3 - 2 Lazio
    Rocchi 11 (L), Vucinic 19 (R), Mancini 42 (R), Perrotta 56 (R), Ledesma 69 (L)
    Stadio Olimpico

Amantino Mancini was inspirational as a Roma side without Francesco Totti still won the Derby della Capitale 3-2!

It was a must-win game for both sides with more than bragging rights at stake. The Giallorossi were without captain Francesco Totti, but Mirko Vucinic filled in admirably with the winner away to Milan on Sunday, a result that put them back in the title race. Lazio were in the bottom half of the table and missing Mobido Diakhitè, Stefano Mauri and Sebastiano Siviglia. At least Luciano Zauri and Fabio Firmani returned from their bans, while Cristian Ledesma recovered from injury.

The Biancocelesti had lost two consecutive games at the Olimpico and their last victory as the 'away' side in a derby was November 1, 1997.

Amantino Mancini drilled off target from a dangerous position and 10 seconds later Lazio took the lead. Tommaso Rocchi struck on the counter to place a precise angled drive into the far bottom corner of the net. It was his third goal in a Rome derby and the striker took advantage of Philippe Mexes's mistake on the offside trap.

The 43-year-old Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta rushed out to close down Mirko Vucinic, who should have done better when he was sent clear on goal.

Vucinic made up for that error by finalising a classic Giallorossi style team goal. He exchanged a series of eight passes with Simone Perrotta, David Pizarro and Mancini to tear the Lazio defence apart and fired low with the inside of his left foot.

Roma were taking control now and went 2-1 up just before half-time. It was a not dissimilar move, as Mancini ran forward and exchanged passes with Mexes to fire into the far top corner, but once again the Lazio defence was static.

Mancini's step-overs confused Luciano Zauri and he cut back for a Vucinic effort saved by Ballotta.

Mourad Meghni replaced Christian Manfredini for the second half, giving Lazio more creativity in midfield, but Ballotta came to the rescue again by punching a Perrotta header over the bar.

Perrotta's celebration was only postponed by a few moments. Vucinic deserves much of the credit for a spectacular volleyed assist, hooking Max Tonetto's pass over his head for the on-rushing Perrotta. The World Cup winner still had a lot to do and chipped Ballotta before tapping into the empty net.

Lazio got back into the match thanks to a stunning Ledesma free kick that curled over the wall and ricocheted in off the underside of the crossbar, but Roma held out for the victory.

Roma: Doni; Panucci, Juan, Mexes, Cassetti; De Rossi, Pizarro (Brighi 87); Mancini (Giuly 75), Perrotta, Tonetto; Vucinic (Cicinho 90)

Lazio: Ballotta; De Silvestri, Stendardo (Makinwa 84), Cribari, Zauri; Mudingayi (Firmani 68), Ledesma, Manfredini (Meghni 46); Mutarelli; Pandev, Rocchi

    Spalletti has Totti-Vucinic plans
    Wednesday 31 October, 2007

Luciano Spalletti gives his respect to Lazio after the derby and insists Mirko Vucinic can co-exist with Francesco Totti.

“Tonight the goals made the difference,” he said after the 3-2 victory over Lazio.

“It was a balanced encounter with an opponent that knows how to close up in its own half to then hit you on the break. We were able to score three times and won, but Lazio also played very well and both sides know how to really use the ball.”

The Biancocelesti had taken the lead through Tommaso Rocchi, but Roma fought back for the victory that keeps them in second place.

It was achieved without the talismanic Totti and, with Vucinic netting his third goal in as many games, some are now wondering how Roma will adapt when their captain returns.

“Vucinic and Totti can quite happily co-exist, as they already have done in the past,” assured Spalletti.

“Of course Vucinic may have to be a little more on the wing, but that is not a problem as strikers do not tend to just stand there in front of the goal.

“I watched Lazio’s forwards tonight and they started out very deep, so there’s nothing to say that Totti has to go very far back to play with Vucinic. They can be in attack together, as long as when one goes forward, the other steps back into that space.”

    Totti’s injury woes continue
    Thursday 22 November, 2007

Francesco Totti’s chances of returning to action against Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris this weekend look slim.

Er Pupone has been out of action since sustaining an ankle injury in the October 23 Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.

The Roma talisman has been frustrated to see his return date pushed back and missed out on key games against Lazio, Milan and the away game in Lisbon.

Just as Totti’s ankle seemed to have recovered, he was hit by a bout of bronchitis that saw him leave training after just 20 minutes yesterday.

Now, he has been dealt another blow after striking the floor while taking set-pieces this morning and reporting a pain in his heel.

A decision will be made tomorrow morning on whether Totti will travel to Genoa.

Meanwhile, Alberto Aquilani is set to stay at Trigoria due to his thigh injury, but Brazilian winger Rodrigo Taddei is back in action.

    Spalletti gives injury update
    Thursday 22 November, 2007

Luciano Spalletti has given an update on his injured trio ahead of Roma’s trip to Genoa on Saturday.

In addition to captain Francesco Totti, midfielder Simone Perrotta and winger Rodrigo Taddei could miss out on Marassi.

Totti has been out of action since October 23 when he picked up an ankle injury against Sporting Lisbon and as he seemed set to recover, he aggravated the problem in training.

“Sadly, he kicked the ground,” Spalletti told Radio Radio.

“Tomorrow we will see how he is. We will know if it was just a small knock or whether it has worsened the inflammation that was already there.”

While there is a chance that Totti could make the trip north, Perrotta will certainly not be travelling with the squad.

“Simone won’t be in Genoa as he isn’t in the squad,” Spalletti confirmed.

“He has had a recurrence of his injury and has been sent home before the game in Kiev on Tuesday.”

However, there is good news regarding Taddei whose calf injury has lingered for longer than expected.

“He is a great professional as ever and he’s ready even when he’s tired, especially mentally,” the Roma Coach enthused.

    Agent: Roma won’t capture Beast
    Friday 23 November, 2007

Spanish Press reports suggest that Roma are chasing Real Madrid outcast Julio Baptista, but the player’s agent claims rumours are unfounded.

According to Marca, the Giallorossi are trying to sign the Brazilian international on loan in January with an option to make the move permanent.

The man nicknamed ‘The Beast’ has fallen out of first-team plans at the Bernabeu and is looking for a fresh challenge after returning from a spell at Arsenal last term, but a move to Rome looks unlikely.

“There has been no contact with Roma. Nobody has discussed this situation with me,” Ernesto Bronzetti claimed on Rete Sport.

“It is true, however, that he’s not playing that much so we are looking at an alternative from Real.

“But I spoke to Daniele Prade’ and we were both surprised to see it in the newspapers. There have been no talks between Roma and Real Madrid for Julio Baptista."

It seems that the transfer fee would rule Roma out of the running for the Selecao star.

“The player is very valuable as this summer Real refused £10m from Milan,” Bronzetti concluded.

“Furthermore, Baptista has a £2m contract, which is more than Roma can afford. This rumour has no basis in truth.”
