yeah i heard something like that, that there were terroist attack threats when they go 2 indonesia. Thats pretty wack, they should try to keep away from indonesia. Do you reckon australia will be able to have an asian cup in australia in one the the next tournamnets?? like in 2011, 2015? Do you think Football Federation Australia will bid to be host at any of these years?

Im just watching the socceroos match, $hit iraq scored again 2-1, socceroos started the second half so well and now iraq have hit back. Kisnorbo should be dropped-he plays in the english division 2 for liecester. Give beachamup ago he plays in the german bundesliga-surely beachamup would be a better player.

Same here, socceroos were disgraceful. Arnold is just not the right man, the players don't look up to him like they did to Guus. Arnold has not motivated his players like Guus did. I can not and never will get over why they are picking Kisnorbo over Beachaump. But now Lucas Neill got a red card, looks like Kisnorbo and Beachamup will be playing together. Thats pretty worrying-those two will be pretty shaky. We definitly need atleast one experineced guy like Neill-who is suspneded, Moore-resting, popovic and vidmar-retired.

beachamp and kisnorbo shuld be fine for the thai defence. f.uck neill and kisnorbo shuldnt be conceeding goals to iraq and oman. we shuldnt be worryin about that. its the fact that our awsume attack...kewell, aloisi, cahill, bresc, dukes, emo, etc shuld be bagging goals against these teams. *** U ARNOLD!!

    Re: Football Federation Australia's Socceroos...

There is no doubt that arnold should make some changes. This is my team for the match against thailand

    --------------------Schwarzer(OF COURSE)------------------

    Emerton-------Kisnorbo--------Beachaump-----Milligan

    ------------------------------Grella-----------------------------

    Culina-----------Cahill-------------------Kewell/Bresciano

    -------------Aloisi-------------------------Viduka--------------

Schwarzer is obvious choice, Kisnorbo and Beachaump are the only centre backs in the squad after Neill got a red card and therefore being suspended. Emerton can play right back. Everyone is trying to play players out of position in the left fullback role with Luke Wilkshire not the answer. Give Milligan ago, he is a fullback and is ready for the opportunity. Grella playing defensive midfield. Cahill has to start if the Socceroos want to win this match by 3 or more goals to qualify for the finals. Using Kewell or Bresciano and Culina on the wings will be effective. Viduka needs someone upfront, put Aloisi next to him to give him more support.

Depending on how the game goes with fatigue, injuries etc. Nicky Carle needs to play some part of the game. Carle is ready for the opportunity aswell as Milligan. Also, have Bresciano or Kewell come on from the off the bench. Sterjovski, Thompson, Wilkshire or Holman should be used for the 3rd substitute if needed.

    Last chance for Socceroos

Amid claims of internal unrest and a supporters' website agitating to get the coach sacked, the Socceroos will try to save their drowning Asian Cup campaign in a must-win clash against Thailand on Monday night.

Despite denials of the rift from the Australian camp, TWG's reporter in Bangkok Scott McIntyre says the Socceroos are in trouble.

Co-hosts Thailand, in the form of their lives and with an estimated 40,000-strong crowd ready to turn out at Rajamangala Stadium to cheer them on, can send pre-tournament favourites Australia home just by snatching a draw in the final group match.

The Socceroos will need to do something they haven't done at this tournament to date to progress to the quarter-finals - win.
They also must hope Iraq get at least a draw in the other Group A clash with Oman being played simultaneously at Supachalasai Stadium to secure a passage to the knockout stage.

That combination of results will put Australia through to the quarter-finals in second place in Group A ahead of the Thais on a head-to-head countback.

But the picture gets tricky if Oman beat Iraq and the Socceroos win, meaning all four teams will be tied on four points and goal difference will come into play to decide the top two nations in the group.

Coach Graham Arnold, who is under pressure from a website acting as an online petition to have him fired, has flagged 'a couple of changes' to the starting line-up against the Thais.

Australia will be forced to replace defender Lucas Neill, who is suspended for his last-gasp send-off for dissent against Iraq.

Striker Archie Thompson is also under an injury cloud after taking a knock on the knee during training.

The Thais, with a win and a draw in their two matches, also have the added spur of remaining in Bangkok for their quarter-final should they top Group A.

The Socceroos have also been forced to deny newspaper reports of a rift among the players during the disappointing campaign so far.

Australia opened the Asian Cup with a lucky 1-1 draw with Oman, and followed that up with a woeful 3-1 loss to Iraq on Friday night to leave their tournament hanging by a thread.

    Schwarzer ready for Thailand test

    Mark Schwarzer - Asia Cup

BANGKOK: Qantas Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is bracing himself for a torrid test from Asian Cup co-hosts Thailand at the Rajamangala National Stadium tomorrow, as Australia prepares to roll the dice for the last time in their bid for progression to the knock-out stages.

One of the most recognised names in the Qantas Socceroos line-up, certainly in Thailand; 34-year-old Schwarzer was irresistible in Australia’s tournament opener against Oman, but admittedly indifferent against Iraq.

Soon after the Socceroos’ 3-1 loss, Schwarzer stated he had ‘held his hand up’ to accept blame for the first of the Australia’s goals conceded against Iraq, but remains confident that he, along with his team mates, can show improvement against the high-flying Thai’s, who themselves have their eyes set on a quarter final place.

“You’ve got to think that you can improve, the two performances that we’ve shown so far have been very, very well below par and really unexplainable and unacceptable and we’re all lost for words at the moment because it really is truly unacceptable the way that we’re playing,” said Schwarzer.

“I think we started the game better than we did against Oman, without a doubt, it’s just unfortunate that we conceded a slack goal, a very slack goal, and that put us on the back foot.

“To our credit, we got ourselves back in the game very early in the second half, but again we gave away another sloppy goal and, all of a sudden Iraq caught us on the back foot and made it their game and we struggled.”

On paper, as with every match the Socceroos have contested at these championships, Thailand would appear a squad out of their depth against an Australian line up featuring talent sourced from many of Europe’s major leagues.

All of Thailand’s line up play their domestic football at home, save for Singapore based pair Therdsak Chaiman and Sutee Suksomkit, and Sarayoot Chaikamdee and Nirut Surasiang, who play in Vietnam.

However, this is a squad that has united Thailand with some stunning showcases of late, and, heading into what is surely one of the most important matches in the recent football history of south east Asia, Thailand will be anything but pushovers.

Last Thursday, Thailand was clinical in seeing off the challenge of Oman to the tune of a 2-0 victory, four days after the Omani’s had held a timid Australian side to a 1-1 draw.

Five days earlier, the Thai’s were unfortunate not to come away from their tournament opening match against Iraq with more than a 1-1 draw – having dominated the Iraqi’s for the majority of the second half.

Leading into the tournament, Thailand were again in rare form – making the final of the highly competitive ASEAN Football Championship where they were defeated 3-2 on aggregate by fellow Asian Cup co-hosts Singapore, before downing regional powerhouses China 1-0 in a friendly international.

Led by iconic striker Kiatisak Senamuang – a living legend in his homeland (nicknamed Zico) and one of an elite band of Thai’s to have once played their football abroad, albeit for modest English side Huddersfield Town, Thailand are hell bent on delivering success to what is already a football-crazy nation.

Also crucial to the Thai’s successes has been 35-year-old captain Tawan Sripan, another veteran of the south east Asian football scene, and the aforementioned Chaiman, who is the latest Thai attacker to have been nicknamed by local fans after a world football icon – Zidane.

Most recently, striker Pipat Tonkanya has become the toast of Thailand – his two goals after coming on as a substitute against Oman shooting the home side to within ninety minutes of a previously unthought of quarter finals berth.

Standing between the Thai’s and their lofty ambitions are the Socceroos and, Schwarzer and his team mates are now all too aware of the pitfalls that await them in this most intriguing of regional competitions.

“It has been a kick in the teeth, without a doubt,” said Schwarzer of Australia’s Asian Cup introduction.

“You have to pick yourselves up, you have to look at the next game and, I think the good thing about the next game is that it comes very quickly and we can try and put things right.”

The day has come. Will the Socceroos win the match and qualify for the finals? I hope the Socceroos can turn around from thier two dissapointing matches and win tonight against Thailand. Although I am confident the great Socceroos team can win, I would not be suprised to see them lose with Lucas Neill out and after their first two disgraceful matches.

GO THE SOCCEROOS! good luck to the boys

Australia through to quarters after Thai win

    Michael Beauchamp - Thailand

Australia has qualified for the quarter finals of the AFC Asian Cup after a nervy, but in the end convincing 4-0 win over a gallant Thailand in Bangkok.

Late goals by skipper Mark Viduka (two) and Harry Kewell, followed up Michael Beauchamp’s first half goal, to set up a mouth-watering clash with defending Asian Champions Japan in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The match was still in the balance with 10 minutes to go with Thailand desperately trying to draw level and putting Australia’s re-shaped defence under enormous pressure. But up stepped the captain to calm nerves with a brilliant solo effort to put the Qantas Socceroos two up and knock the wind out of the Thais sails and they went on with it and added two further goals.

It will be a match to saviour for coach Graham Arnold and his team after a tumultuous three days in which he and the squad have had to fend off allegations of rifts in the camp, which only added to the poor form shown in the opening two matches.

After the two opening poor performances, Arnold made four changes to the starting line-up and also decided to revert to a 3-5-2 formation, with John Aloisi partnering Mark Viduka up front, Mark Milligan and Michael Beauchamp coming into the defence for Lucas Neill (suspended) and Patrick Kisnorbo, while David Carney came onto the left side of midfield with Brett Holman dropping to the bench.

The players were helped by the later kick-off and rain falling before and during the match and started the match looking fresh, sharp and committed.

Viduka and Vince Grella had early chances, with Viduka having a clear sight on goal, but couldn’t get enough power on his left foot shot, while Grella hit a long range volley over the bar.

On eight minutes, Mark Schwarzer was nearly embarrassed by a cross from Sutee Suksomkit that curled wickedly just past the far post top corner.

However Australia’s early endeavour was rewarded in the 21st minute, when Michael Beauchamp powered in and headed home a Luke Wilkshire free kick for his first international goal.

Not content with one, Australia continued to attack the Thailand goal with Aloisi heading over a Bresciano cross, while Viduka tried a long range shot that went over the bar.

In the dying minutes of the half both sides had chances with Aloisi denied by a desperate lunge by Saiwaeo as he was set to pounce on Wilkshire’s brilliant cross. While up the other end, Sutee was wide of the near post from a free kick that had Schwarzer beaten.

Wilkshire, moved from left back to a more familiar right midfield role, should have had Australia 2-0 up seconds into the second half when he advanced on the Thai goal, but blazed his shot over the bar.

Eight minutes later, he had another terrific opportunity when teed up by Bresciano, only this time, his placed shot was hit straight at the keeper.

From then on, it was backs to the wall for Australia, as Thailand lifted the tempo and had Australia under enormous pressure, with right fullback Suree Sukha particularly dangerous.

But led by a brilliant display from Sydney FC defender Milligan, Australia kept the Thais at bay, who were mainly forced to shoot from long range, although several crosses caused some concern before being cleared.

Then came the classic sucker punch in the 80th minute, when a rare foray forward by Australia, saw substitute Tim Cahill cross to Viduka, who chested the ball down and held off two defenders to give himself room to shoot. His shot beat the keeper and cannoned into the goal off Sukha, which effectively killed off the game as the Thais became instantly deflated.

With Thailand’s enthusiasm for the battle now over, Australia went for the kill and Viduka made it a brace four minutes later when he headed home Cahill’s cross from the right.

After a Brett Holman miss from right in front, it was left to Kewell to add the finishing touch to a memorable night for Australia, when he raced 30 metres from the right touchline into the penalty box and finished with aplomb and send the vocal band of Aussie supporters into raptures.

The team will now head to Vietnam tomorrow for Saturday’s clash with Japan, who were in ominous form earlier in the day, thrashing Vietnam 4-1 to top Group B.

In the other group A match, Iraq and Oman played out a 0-0 draw, which means Iraq finished as group winners and will meet Vietnam in the quarter finals.

    Match Details

    Thailand 0

    Re: Football Federation Australia's Socceroos...

GO THE SOCCEROOS! I am so proud of what the team did last night, turning around their poor form to win the game convincingly 4-0. There is now no reason why Australia can't go all the way. In the next match against Japan, Australia need to keep the likes Milligan, Beachaump and Carney in the team as these are the players that helped us win 4-0 and qualify for the finals. There is no doubt Australia would of liked to avoid Japan and they will be a very hard team, but Australia can do it. Look no further than Germany last year, 3-1 over the Japanese. Playing Kewell and Cahill off the bench proved a masterstroke and I wouldn't be suprised if Arnold did this again in the upcoming games. Well done Graham Arnold for not being afraid to field the likes of Milligan, Carney and Beachaump as they got us over the edge and played some great football. Not to mention Beachaump's 21st minute header. I would also like to add how happy I am that Viduka had Aloisi upfront with him. For so long Viduka has suffered up by himself as a lone striker. Now I hope Graham Arnold keeps playing Aloisi or another forward upfront with the almighty Dukes.

Congratulations to Graham Arnold for finally proving his worth in the Asian Cup and lets just hope for him and the team, the Socceroos keep wining and reach the final.
