'Golden' Buffon
Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will win the 2006 Ballon D'or — the Golden Ball award — as Europe's Player of the Year, Italian sports daily Tuttosport reported on Tuesday. Buffon, who helped Italy win the World Cup this summer, supposedly beat out Italy teammate and Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro and Arsenal's Thierry Henry. France Football magazine, who organizes voting of the annual award, says it won't reveal the name of this year's winner until Nov. 27. In the meantime, Tuttosport reports that the journalists handed in their votes on Monday night. If indeed Buffon turns out to be the winner, it will be well-deserved. Not only is he the best goalkeeper in the world, but he was Italy's best player (along with Cannavaro) at the World Cup. Also, if Buffon does win the award, he will be only the second goalkeeper to win it after the legendary Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union in 1963.
