Who would claim the final Champions League spot in Serie A?

The 2007-08 season at Serie A could be one of the most shocking in the history of that league if AC Milan would not qualify to the Champions League for the 2008-09 season after winning it all in 2006-07. Currently there are five games left to be played in the top professional soccer league in Italy, Serie A with currently four team has a “reasonable” chance to claim that final fourth spot in Serie A because only four teams from Serie A would qualify to the UEFA Champions League. AC Milan has to compete with Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Udinese for that final spot. According to foxsoccer.com these are the standing and schedules with five games left to play:

Out of all three of them AC Milan has the best chance to finish in the fourth spot and qualify to the Champions League 2008-09 season. Playing 3 out 5 last games at homes, AC Milan would only concentrate on the Serie A. The only problems would be playing Inter Milan, who are currently competing for the title and playing Udinese who are competing for the last Champions League spot as well. Let’s not forget that AC Milan is the “best team on the paper” out of these four. Fiorentina’s chances are smaller then AC Milan’s but bigger than Sampdoria’s and Udinese’s, only because they are four and five points ahead of Sampdoria and Udinese respectably. AC Milan has a better chance than Fiorentina only because Fiorentina are still in the UEFA Cup competition, playing Rangers, possible Scottish League champions this year, in the two-leg format during the mid-week which would distract them from Serie A. Next comes in Udinese having way easier schedule than Sampdoria and only trailing Fiorentina by five points with five games to go. Udinese might even qualify if it would come down to the end, playing an important match with AC Milan as their final game of the season. Sampdoria has the smallest shot to take the fourth spot because there are having a very difficult schedule playing Fiorentina and Udinese, who both have the same goal as Sampdoria. In addition, playing Roma who are chasing the title and Palermo who are competing for the spot in the UEFA Cup, while nothing-to-play for Juventus are still a strong opponent. Sorry to disappoint you fellow Inter Milan fans and anti-Milan fans but looks like we would see AC Milan next year in the UEFA Champions League. If not, then AC Milan would lose so much money this year after an early exit from Champions League this season and missing out on the competition next season. In addition, it would be nice to see AC Milan win UEFA Cup for the first time in their club history. But let’s all hope and cheer for Fiorentina.
I would keep you posted on the topic every week.
